No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
