A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
