Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
