Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
